SUPPORTING OUR COASTAL COMMUNITY IN TIMES OF NEED
CURRENT GIVING PROGRAMS
Our Fishing Community is experiencing unusual hardship.
Help us help this incredible part of our community, and our history.
Our fishing community may be the heart of Bodega Bay and what they are going through right now warrants being featured.
Historically a fishing village, Bodega Bay continues to have a very lively and healthy fishing population that includes both commercial fishing crews, as well charter or sport fishing crews.
Used to dealing with our rolling waters and somewhat unpredictable weather, this community is a resilient bunch and has had to learn to be as rough-and-tumble as the ocean they farm.
This includes the roller coaster of the boom and bust nature of fishing seasons like the crab season and salmon season — in which much bounty is brought in — followed by dry periods of little-to-no fishing opportunity.
However right now our fishing community is experiencing unusually extreme hardship — a dry period unmatched in length or detrimental effect.
Due to new legislation preventing whale entanglement, our commercial crab season is now greatly reduced. This is good for saving whales but also leaves our fishing community without an opportunity to work.
But what’s worse, is this year salmon season has been cancelled completely, with no promise it will open again next year. Crab and salmon season are the two seasons our fishing community rely on to survive. These are hard working people who have just had their jobs disappear overnight.
